Harmony vs stimulus in the genesis of creative ideas:
The research on group membership has traditionally advocated stable membership, not just for greater morale and cohesiveness but also for improved performance via comfort and shared experiences. Research on the benefits of dissent, discussion, and diversity, on the other hand, would support a change in membership since it would provide access to opposing viewpoints and encourage more varied and creative ideas. The current study compared idea development whether membership was kept the same vs altered entirely. We hypothesized that keeping membership would improve comfort and also the sense of creativity, but not actual creative behavior, whereas switching membership would result in a less comfortable experience but also a rise in the quantity and quality of ideas created.
